As your child reaches through milestones, which include their development, social and cognitive skills, they become masters at their own play. This can make it challenging to establish a consistent daily routine that accommodates their changing needs.    

However, a routine that creates a logical flow during the different stages of their lives, particularly between the ages of 3 and 5, is important.  

Navigating this can feel like an endless maze, but don't worry, we're here to help you during the different stages.  

Age 3

At 3 years old, your little one is like a tiny explorer with boundless energy, ready to conquer the world.

Here are practical tips to consider when setting a routine that keeps up with their whirlwind of activity:

  • Keep it simple: With all that energy to burn, keep activities fun and straightforward. Encourage physical playtime for at least 1 hour every day through activities such as running, jumping, or playing ball games.  For quieter moments, consider options such as building with blocks, colouring, or engaging in imaginative play.  
  • Consistent bedtime routines: Regular sleep is important for their growing bodies and minds. Start winding down with a bedtime story an hour before bedtime, and don't forget their naptime.
  • Brushing their teeth: Start teaching your child to brush their teeth themselves twice per day at the same time and guide them through the process.

Age 4

At the age of 4, encourage their budding autonomy and newfound independence by involving them in creating their daily routine. Here’s how:

  • Morning magic: Help your child start their day on the right foot by establishing a morning routine. Get them involved in getting dressed, brushing their teeth and eating breakfast together.
  • Instil good hygiene habits: As your child gets their pre-school schedule ready, teach them the importance of good hygiene habits. Make handwashing fun and teach them to do it before and after eating or going to the bathroom … and remind them to cover those sneezes!
  • Champion their independence: Allow them to make their own decisions, such as picking out their own clothes, or lend a hand with simple tasks such as setting the table.

Age 5

Your 5-year-old is blossoming with an expanding vocabulary, clearer speech and a longer attention span. Get ready for deeper conversations and increased focus.  

Here's how to keep up:

  • Encourage reading: Reading is the key to unlocking their imagination and language skills. Set aside a special time each day for story adventures together.
  • Teach responsibility: Start teaching them the ropes of responsibility by giving them small tasks around the house, such as feeding the family pet or helping with chores.
  • Limit screen time: While screens can be tempting, limit their screen time to just an hour per day. Encourage more hands-on activities instead.
